Software Skills Testing -The Categories and Levels
Results are organized by Categories, as well as Level. Categories are different for each evaluation but the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels appear on every
evaluation.
Overall, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced scores show general knowledge levels of the software, while the Category results point to specific areas of strengths and weaknesses. The Basic Skills Level
Basic skills are the minimum skills required to operate the software properly. This is, perhaps, the most important category to take into consideration. A candidate may have a low Overall score, but may do well on the Basic level.
This type of candidate will perform data entry or repetitive assignments well, but should be limited to basic tasks. If the Basic score is high but the Overall score is low, training in the more complex or powerful functions of the software is recommended. The Intermediate Skills Level
Intermediate skills are skills that require more experience to accomplish than basic skills. Intermediate skills are, however, still oriented toward general application skills. At times, a self-taught user will do better on the Intermediate level than on the Basic level.
This is usually an indication the person has learned some of the powerful features, immediately applied them, but did not take the time to learn the software from bottom to top. This should be considered when evaluating the candidate. A candidate that does well in this level will usually do well in other levels.
Candidates scoring well in both Intermediate and Basic levels should have no problem with more challenging assignments. The Advanced Skills Level
Advanced skills are skills that require a great deal of experience to accomplish. A candidate that does well in this level will have the ability to take command of the most demanding assignments. Categories
Evaluations are divided into subject categories to help determine a candidate's
areas of expertise. The categories generally correspond to the major features of the subject software.
For example, word processing tests typically include categories for text, documents, graphics, tables and tools. A spreadsheet evaluation would likely include categories for workbooks, charts & graphics, display & printing, and formulas. Each category is scored separately in the evaluation results.
